Music / Canal Club notebook

Make room for listening.

An evening built around one record, a few friends and no shuffle button.

Start with an invitation

Ask everyone to bring one album they want to hear from beginning to end. It need not be rare or fashionable. The useful question is why this particular record still matters to the person who brought it.

Keep the setup simple

A comfortable room and a reasonable volume are enough. Put phones away for the first side. Make tea, leave space between tracks and resist the temptation to turn every silence into a recommendation.

Let the conversation arrive

After the final track, talk about a detail rather than giving a score. A bass line, a lyric, an unexpected pause. Listening together becomes interesting when nobody is asked to prove that their taste is correct.
