Cycling / Canal Club notebook
The everyday bicycle.
Why the best ride is often the one you do not need to think about.
Useful beats impressive
A city bicycle is not a statement about speed. It is a basket full of groceries, a rain jacket over the handlebars and the ability to stop whenever a friend waves. A comfortable position and a reliable lock matter more than a polished frame.
A little care goes a long way
Check lights before an evening ride, keep tyres at a sensible pressure and make sure the brakes feel predictable. Regular attention is easier than waiting for a small problem to become a roadside problem.
Ride with the street
Slow down around crowded junctions and give pedestrians time to cross. The pleasure of cycling comes from sharing a place, not winning it. Leave the racing mood for a quiet road beyond the city.
